Build Trust and Rapport

Chapter 3
The Structure of Powerful, Open-ended Questions
Tool from the chapter: Powerful questions begin with “how” or “what” – not why. When used, this tool has the power to transform the questions you ask into “keys” that unlock hidden connections and ideas. Read more on page 100 of the book.
Bonus tip: one of Will’s favorite questions is “what struck you about that experience?” because it reaches both thinkers and feelers.
Chapter 4
The Power of Reflective Listening
Tool from the chapter: Reflecting back the words, feelings, ideas, or connections that people share brings clarity to our conversations. On a deeper level, it also ensures people feel heard by you. Discover the four elements and types of reflective listening on page 127 of the book.
Chapter 5
Empathy: The Power of Connection
Tool from the chapter: Describe the world as ‘they’ see it. You can utilize the art and science of reflective listening discussed in Chapter 4 to help develop empathy. The key to empathy is to be able to step into one of their shoes but not lose footing in your own reality. Read more about the distinction between apathy, sympathy, and empathy on page 150 of the book.
Fun Fact: many great companies have actually created “Empathy Labs” to better understand their customers because they know how important this aspect is to creating a human connection.
