3 Foundational Ways to Start a Meeting
The video above unpacks three foundational activities you can use to make the most of We! Connect Nametags.
- Kickoff with Connection Before Content by simply inviting people to fill out the prompt along with their first name. This simple action breaks the norm of typical meetings by starting with connection. In just a glance, participants can learn about each other’s interests and spark conversations.
- Partner Nametags adds a small twist by inviting people to pair up and fill out somebody else’s nametag. This is a simple and perfect excuse for people to make a meaningful connection before your event even officially begins.
- Digital Nametags is an easy method where the host simply holds up a nametag to their camera and invites participants to fill in the prompt in the chat. This is lite, low risk, and promotes immediate active contribution. Remember to always invite people to then scroll up and “listen” to what people had to share by reading the responses.

7 Creative Ways to Start a Meeting
These activities transform traditional nametags into tools for meaningful connections and more memorable gatherings.
- Fishbowl Frenzy creates a playful, energetic atmosphere that encourages quick, meaningful connections. Ideal for larger groups to boost energy and engagement in under 5 minutes. Essentially, you’ll invite attendees to fill out their nametag then drop it in a “fishbowl.” Then at some point, pass the bowl around and invite everybody to pick out a (stranger’s) nametag. When you say “go” it is everybody’s job to find the rightful owner however they can.
- Virtual Name Swap facilitates instant, curiosity-driven conversations in a video call. Simply hold up a nametag to your camera and invite people to change their name on the platform to their response. So if the prompt you chose was “I want to learn more about…”, everybody will change their display name to their response (e.g., space, SEO, community engagement, etc.). This creates a unique and unconventional way to put “connection before content.”
- Connection Name Wall is a method where you would invite attendees to post their completed nametags on a designated wall or table in a common space. You could invite people to leave a method of contact—or not. In the right context, this can really smooth the process of matching up the “right people into the right conversations.”
- Question Exchange is similar to the We! Connect Cards question swap and allows participants to pair up and ask each other questions based on their nametag prompts. The key here is that it would be a designated, facilitated activity lasting 5 to 30 minutes as opposed to a rolling, unofficial start.
- The Official Start of most events is below average at best. Waiting, housekeeping, tech snafus. A much more compelling way to kickoff an event is to announce at the very, very beginning that you’d like to put “connection before content” and direct folks to the sticker nametags on their chairs, tables or lanyards. Invite everybody to take a moment filling it out while music plays. Then after a minute, invite people to reintroduce themselves to somebody nearby. This sets an entirely different tone for the rest of the group’s time together.
- Colorful Connections is a playful, unique way to invite participants to randomly mix and match to get out of silos to facilitate cross-functional connection. In nearly any group size, you could invite people to form a group of three containing a blue, green, and purple nametag. Or you could suggest that all the “greens” form a table over here. Or you could sort based on the prompt each person chose. This method can be used in the middle of an event to shake things up and reenergize the room with fresh perspectives.
- Nametag Doodle is a playful activity that breaks the ice, encourages creativity, and leads to laughter and meaningful conversations. Pass out the nametags and simply ask participants to draw their response to their nametag prompt instead of writing it. Then have folks get into groups of three to guess the drawing’s meaning.
