Quick Networking Exercise

You can repeat nearly the exact “Story Swap” exercise above using the quote side of the cards as well. Call it “Quick Quotes” if you will. In this variation, just prompt people to share “what the quote means to them” with their partner before swapping cards and looking for a new partner.

Pick a card that represents something you are passionate about and get together in “couples” or “trouples” to share your passion. Other prompts could include: a reason for being there, a personal strength you might bring to the team, etc.

Lay out the cards on a table creating a museum gallery of quotes. Ask people to walk around looking for a quote that resonates with them. After a few minutes, the museum turns into a yard sale where people can grab whatever quote they felt most strongly about. Participants can share their quotes in a small or large group along with the reason they chose it.

Invite each group member to randomly select a card. Then instruct people to find another person with an image that has something in common with the image on their card. With one pair formed, combine with another pair to form a group of four. In this small group, find as many things as possible that the four images have in common. Uses this a conversation starter and metaphor for human connections. What is it about commonalities that bring us together? How can we transform differences into points of connection?

Choose a quote that really “clicks” with you. Then take a minute to consider how you might edit that quote to really match where you are at in life. Then get together in “couples”, “trouples” or groups to share your quote—and your edit. Focus in on what inspired that specific edit, addition, or subtraction from the original quote. This is a great exercise to spark conversation that puts people in the position of “expert of their own experience.”

Visualizing Values Team Activity

Ask groups of 4-6 to select a quote that represents a piece of their work culture. Then, invite each member of the group to choose and place a photo around that quote that represents a story where they felt the team made that quote come alive. This can be a very powerful exercise. Feel free to let multiple small groups share a highlights with other groups.

Form a circle with rope or webbing and lay the cards out around the outside of circle. Invite group members to walk around to choose an image that represents a positive behavior they want to achieve during the program. Then, invite group members to share why they chose the card and toss it inside the circle.

Forging a Future Unofficial Start

Ask small groups to agree on a single card that best represents their goal for the day. Alternatively, have the group reach a consensus on three cards to represent what the group was like at the start, where they are now, and what they want to strive to be.

Debriefing or Reflecting

Ask group members to select a card that represents a takeaway from an activity – or program. Other prompts could be: a commitment for the future, a personal strength they feel they demonstrated during the program, or one thing they will do differently when they leave.

Have each member of the group select a quote that speaks to their experience during the meeting, day, quarter, year, etc. Then, do one large whip around the entire circle inviting participants to share their quote followed by their own original 1-2 sentence quote to encapsulate their experience.

Invite small groups of participants to tell a collaborative story based on the images on each card that captures each of their experience in the training/event/meeting. As small groups share their story with the larger group (either improvised or rehearsed), have people lay down their images to connect either to one, or multiple, side of another card.
